Product overview

Cold Rolled Coils & Sheets (CR): overview and uses

Cold rolled (CR) steel is hot rolled strip that has been pickled and re-rolled at room temperature, producing a smooth, bright, close-tolerance sheet in gauges from about 0.3 mm to 3 mm for panels, enclosures, furniture and precision fabrication.

Cold rolling improves surface finish, flatness and thickness tolerance, so CR sheet is chosen wherever the steel is visible, painted, powder coated or formed in a press. It is the standard base material for electrical enclosures, cabinets, ducting, doors, shelving and light-gauge pressings.

OGB supplies CR coils and cut sheets in commercial and drawing qualities. Thickness, width and surface condition are confirmed per enquiry.

Questions

Cold Rolled Coils & Sheets (CR): common questions

When should I use CR instead of GI sheet?

Use CR when the part will be painted or powder coated after fabrication, or when welding and forming quality matter more than built-in corrosion protection. Use GI (galvanized) when the finished part is exposed to weather without further coating.

Is cold rolled steel stronger than hot rolled?

Cold working raises the yield strength of the strip, but CR is usually specified for its surface and tolerance rather than strength. Structural members are normally designed in HR grades.

What gauges are stocked?

Common gauges between 0.5 mm and 2.0 mm are the most readily available. Other thicknesses within the 0.3 mm to 3.0 mm range are confirmed per enquiry.
