Product overview

Hot Rolled Coils & Sheets (HR): overview and uses

Hot rolled (HR) steel coil and sheet is mild steel rolled above its recrystallisation temperature, giving a dark mill-scale surface in thicknesses from about 1.2 mm up to heavy plate. It is the base material for structural fabrication, chequer plate, tanks, trailers and general engineering.

Hot rolled steel is produced by rolling slab at high temperature, so it is economical, easy to weld and available in heavier gauges than cold rolled material. The surface carries a blue-grey mill scale and the tolerances are wider, which suits structural and fabrication work where the steel is cut, welded and painted.

OGB supplies HR coils for processors and HR sheets and plates cut to length for fabricators. Grade, thickness, width and length are confirmed per enquiry against the project specification.

Characteristics

Why HR Coils & Sheets works in the UAE

Heavier gauges

HR is the practical route to 3 mm and above, where cold rolled sheet stops.

Weldable mild steel

Standard structural grades weld and cut cleanly with common site equipment.

Coil, sheet or plate

Supplied as coil for processing or cut to length for direct fabrication.

Questions

Hot Rolled Coils & Sheets (HR): common questions

What is the difference between hot rolled and cold rolled steel?

Hot rolled steel is rolled at high temperature, giving a scaled surface, wider tolerances and heavier thicknesses at lower cost. Cold rolled steel is further rolled at room temperature, giving a smooth bright surface, tighter tolerances and thinner gauges, typically 0.3 mm to 3 mm.

Which HR grade should I ask for?

General fabrication in the UAE is normally quoted in S235JR or S275JR to EN 10025, or ASTM A36. If a drawing specifies a grade, quote that grade; otherwise OGB will propose the equivalent available from stock.

Can HR sheets be supplied cut to size?

Yes. Standard sheets are supplied in stock lengths, and cut-to-length or plate cutting can be arranged. Share the cutting list with your enquiry.
