Steel Weight Calculator
Pick a section and size to get the weight per metre, total weight and pieces per tonne. Standard tables for IPE beams, UPN channels, angles, hollow sections, tubes, flat bars and plates.
How to use it · 3 easy steps
- 1 Pick the shape of the steel below. Each button shows what it looks like.
- 2 Choose the size from the list, or type your own.
- 3 Enter the length and number of pieces. The total weight appears straight away.
Example: 10 pieces of IPE 200 beam, each 6 m long, weigh 1,344 kg (1.34 tonnes).
Step 1 · What shape is your steel?
Your result
Theoretical weights from nominal dimensions. Beam, channel and angle values are taken from EN 10365 and EN 10056-1 section tables; hollow sections follow EN 10219 with standard corner radii. Final weights are confirmed on the mill certificate.

How do I calculate the weight of a steel beam?
Multiply the weight per metre from the section table by the total length. An IPE 200 weighs 22.4 kg/m, so ten 6 m lengths weigh 22.4 × 6 × 10 = 1,344 kg.
What is the formula for the weight of a square or rectangular tube?
For a cold-formed hollow section, the area is 2t(H + B − 2t) minus a small correction for the rounded corners, and the weight per metre is that area in mm² × 0.00785. A 100 × 100 × 4 mm SHS weighs about 11.7 kg/m.
What is the formula for the weight of a round steel pipe?
Weight in kg/m = 0.02466 × t × (D − t), with the outside diameter D and wall thickness t in millimetres. A 48.3 × 3.2 mm tube weighs 3.56 kg/m.
How do I calculate the weight of a steel plate or flat bar?
Weight in kg = length × width × thickness in metres × 7,850. For a flat bar, kg/m = width × thickness in mm × 0.00785, so a 50 × 5 mm flat bar weighs 1.96 kg/m.
Why do mill weights differ slightly from the calculator?
The calculator uses nominal dimensions and a density of 7,850 kg/m³. Rolling tolerances, corner radii and galvanizing change real weights by a few percent, so final weights are confirmed on the mill certificate.
What does 1½" NB mean for a pipe?
NB is the nominal bore, the trade name for a pipe size. A 1½" NB pipe has an outside diameter of 48.3 mm, a 2" NB pipe 60.3 mm and a 4" NB pipe 114.3 mm.
