How the numbers work

Simple formulas, shown openly.

Every result comes from the dimensions you enter and the standard figures below. Nothing is hidden and nothing is priced.

Panels per wall or slope

length ÷ cover width, rounded up

Standard cover width 1,000 mm

Roof panel length

span ÷ cos(pitch) + overhang

Gable span = half the building width

Chain link posts

length ÷ 3.0 m, rounded up, + 1

Plus larger corner and end posts

PVC Eco Fence

2 panels per metre · post every 2.5 m

One 400 × 400 × 1000 mm block per post

Sheet or plate weight

L × W × t × 7,850 kg/m³

Aluminium 2,700 kg/m³

Coil length

weight ÷ (t × width × 7,850)

How many sandwich panels do I need for a wall?

Divide the wall length by the panel cover width and round up. With the standard 1,000 mm cover width, a 24 m wall needs 24 panels, each cut to the wall height. Multiply the wall length by its height for the area in square metres, and add 3 to 5 percent for cutting waste.

How is roof panel length worked out on a pitched roof?

The panel runs from eave to ridge, so its length is the slope length: half the building width divided by the cosine of the roof pitch on a gable roof, or the full width divided by the cosine on a mono-pitch roof. Add any eave overhang. The number of panels per slope is the building length divided by the cover width, rounded up.

How many posts does a chain link fence need?

Line posts are normally set at about 3.0 m centres. Divide the fence length by 3.0, round up and add one, then add the larger corner and end posts. A 120 m straight run therefore needs 41 posts.

How many PVC Eco Fence panels are needed per metre?

PVC Eco Fence panels are about 500 mm wide, so a run needs two panels per metre. Sections are 2.5 m centre to centre, with a precast block and brace at every post.

How do I calculate the weight of a steel sheet?

Weight in kg equals length × width × thickness in metres × 7,850 kg/m³. A 2.5 m × 1.25 m sheet at 2 mm weighs 2.5 × 1.25 × 0.002 × 7,850 = 49.1 kg. Use 2,700 kg/m³ for aluminium.

How do I find the length of steel in a coil?

Length in metres equals coil weight in kg divided by (thickness × width in metres × 7,850). A 5 t coil, 0.5 mm thick and 1,220 mm wide, holds about 1,044 m of strip.

Does the calculator show prices?

No. The calculator gives measurements and quantities only. Prices depend on specification, quantity and delivery, so OGB confirms them in a written quotation.
