Chequered Plates (Mild Steel & Stainless): overview and uses
A chequered plate is a hot-rolled steel plate with a raised anti-slip pattern, usually teardrop or diamond, rolled into one face. Mild steel floor plate is covered by ASTM A786; stainless 304 chequered plate is also available.
The raised pattern gives grip underfoot and under wheels, so chequered plate is used for stair treads, walkways, ramps, trench covers and truck floors. Thickness is measured on the plain plate, without the pattern.
Mild steel plate is supplied black as rolled or hot-dip galvanized for outdoor use. Stainless 304 chequered plate suits food plants, wet areas and decorative work.

Is the thickness measured with or without the pattern?
Without. The stated thickness is the plain plate; the raised pattern adds about 1 – 2 mm on top.
Should I galvanize chequered plate for outdoor use?
Yes. In the UAE, black plate used outdoors rusts quickly. Hot-dip galvanizing, or painting with a proper system, is recommended for exposed walkways and covers.
