Cold-formed lipped and plain C sections in black or galvanized steel for purlins, girts and light framing.
Product overview
A C-channel is a light steel section roll-formed from flat strip into a "C" shape with a uniform wall thickness and sharp bends, supplied plain or with small inward lips. It is lighter than a hot-rolled UPN channel and is the usual choice for purlins, girts and light framing.
Cold-formed C-channels are made by bending steel strip at room temperature, so the wall thickness is the same all round and the corners are tight. This gives a high stiffness for the weight, which is why C sections are used for roof purlins, wall girts, mezzanine joists and light frames.
They are different from hot-rolled channels. A UPN channel has tapered inner flanges and rounded roots, and a PFC has thick parallel flanges; both are heavier sections for structural members. OGB supplies cold-formed C-channels in black steel or pre-galvanized Z275 steel, cut and punched to your schedule.
Characteristics
Uniform wall thickness gives a strong section for very little weight.
Pre-galvanized Z275 strip resists corrosion without painting.
Lengths and bolt-hole patterns can be made to your purlin schedule.

Questions
A C-channel is cold-formed from thin strip with a uniform wall and sharp corners. A UPN is hot-rolled with tapered inner flanges, and a PFC is hot-rolled with parallel flanges. UPN and PFC are heavier structural members; C-channels are used for purlins, girts and light framing.
Lips stiffen the flanges, so lipped C sections carry more load as purlins and girts for the same thickness. Plain C sections are used for trims, frames and fabrication where lips are not needed.
Pre-galvanized Z275 strip is economical and suits most roof and wall framing. Hot-dip galvanizing after fabrication gives a thicker coating, including on cut edges and holes, for harsh coastal or industrial sites.
