Product overview

PIR Sandwich Panels: overview and uses

PIR sandwich panels use a polyisocyanurate foam core between PPGI or aluminium facings. PIR is a modified polyurethane with improved fire behaviour and the same low thermal conductivity, making it the preferred insulated panel for warehouses, cold stores and buildings with fire-rated envelopes.

PIR foam is produced with a higher isocyanate index than standard PU, which gives it a char-forming structure under fire and better performance in reaction-to-fire tests. Thermally it performs like PU, so a PIR panel offers the same insulation thickness with a higher fire classification.

OGB supplies PIR panels for roofs and walls in the thicknesses used for warehouses, food plants, cold stores and labour accommodation. Core thickness, facing, profile and joint are confirmed per project.

Characteristics

Why PIR Panels works in the UAE

Better fire behaviour

Char-forming core with higher reaction-to-fire classes than standard PU.

Low lambda

Thermal conductivity ≈ 0.022 W/m·K, the best of the common panel cores.

Roof and wall

Trapezoidal roof profile or flat / micro-ribbed wall profile with concealed fixings.

Build your panel

Choose core, thickness and colour

Pick a combination to see its insulation value, then send it to OGB as a quotation request. Every panel is made to order and cut to your length.

1 · Core
2 · Thickness
3 · Outer colour

Colours shown are the common stock RAL shades; other RAL colours, PVDF coatings and different inner/outer colours are available on request. Screen colours are approximate, so confirm against a physical colour card.

Stock PIR panels: lower price, like-new quality

Besides new production, OGB supplies PIR sandwich panels from stock lots. Stock panels cost less than new panels and their quality is the same as new: the same cores, skins and joints, ready for immediate delivery.

What is in stock changes from week to week. Thickness, length, colour and quantity of each stock lot are listed in the quotation, so you know exactly what you are buying before you order.

  1. 01Lower price than new production
  2. 02Like-new condition, same specification as new panels
  3. 03Ready stock for fast delivery
  4. 04Each lot described in writing: thickness, length, colour, quantity

Testing & standards

How PIR Panels are tested

These are the test methods and standards that specifiers, civil defence and insurers ask about. Ratings belong to a specific tested system, so OGB supplies the certificate that matches your panel, thickness and joint.

EN 14509
European product standard for self-supporting double-skin metal-faced sandwich panels: dimensions, tolerances, strength, thermal and fire declarations.
EN 13501-1
Reaction-to-fire classification (A1, A2, B … F) of the panel or its core.
EN 13501-2 / EN 1364
Fire-resistance rating of a tested wall or roof system, written as EI 30, EI 60, EI 120 (integrity and insulation, in minutes).
ASTM E84 / UL 723
Surface burning characteristics: flame-spread and smoke-developed indices.
FM 4880 / FM 4881
FM Approvals tests for fire performance and for structural and wind-load performance of insulated panel systems.
NFPA 285
Large-scale fire-propagation test for exterior walls that contain combustible components.
ASTM C518
Laboratory measurement of thermal conductivity and R-value of the insulating core.
ASTM E283 / E331
Air leakage and water penetration through the panel joints under pressure.

Questions

PIR Sandwich Panels: common questions

Do you have PIR panels in stock at a lower price?

Yes. OGB supplies PIR sandwich panels from stock lots at a lower price than new production, with quality the same as new. Thickness, length, colour and quantity depend on the lot and are confirmed in the quotation.

Is the quality of stock PIR panels the same as new?

Yes. Stock panels have the same core, steel skins and joints as new panels. Each lot is described in writing before you order, so you can check that it matches your project.

What is the difference between PIR and PU sandwich panels?

Both are rigid polyurethane-family foams with similar insulation value. PIR is formulated with extra isocyanate and a catalyst that forms a protective char when burned, so it achieves better fire classifications. PIR is specified where the project or the insurer requires a fire-rated envelope.

Are PIR panels fire rated?

PIR panels can achieve recognised reaction-to-fire and insulation ratings when tested as a system. The rating applies to the specific panel, facing and joint tested, so ask for the test certificate for the panel being quoted rather than assuming a generic rating.

Which thickness of PIR panel do I need?

As a guide: 40 mm to 50 mm for sheds and site offices, 75 mm to 100 mm for air-conditioned warehouses and chillers, 120 mm to 200 mm for freezers and blast rooms. The design temperature and the U-value target decide the thickness.
