Product overview

GI Chain Link Fence: overview and uses

GI chain link fence is galvanized steel wire woven into a diamond mesh, usually 50 × 50 mm in 2.0 – 5.0 mm wire, stretched between galvanized pipe posts with line wires and a top rail. It is the standard permanent boundary fence in the UAE for industrial, agricultural, infrastructure and residential perimeters, supplied plain galvanized or PVC-coated.

GI (galvanized iron) chain-link is the workhorse of perimeter protection in the UAE. Hot-dip galvanized wire, woven into a diamond mesh, is stretched between galvanized posts to define boundaries, secure compounds and protect infrastructure, with the zinc coating resisting heat, humidity and coastal corrosion. A PVC coat over the galvanized wire adds colour and a second barrier.

OGB supplies chain-link fabric in rolls with the matching intermediate, straining and corner posts, top rail, line wires, stretcher bars, tie wire, fittings and barbed-wire extensions where required. Mesh size, wire gauge, fence height, coating and roll length are confirmed per enquiry.

Characteristics

Why GI Chain Link works in the UAE

Hot-dip galvanized wire

Zinc coating to BS EN 10244-2 / ISO 1461 protects the wire in heat, humidity and salt air.

Plain or PVC-coated

Galvanized for utility fencing; green, black or beige PVC coat where appearance and extra protection matter.

1.0 – 4.0 m heights

Boundary fencing at 1.8 – 2.4 m; security perimeters at 2.4 – 3.0 m with barbed extension.

Questions

GI Chain Link Fence: common questions

What is GI fencing?

GI (galvanized iron) fencing is steel chain-link or mesh fencing with a zinc coating that protects it against rust. It is widely used in the UAE for boundary fencing, industrial perimeters, compounds, farms and infrastructure because it resists heat, humidity and coastal conditions.

How long does GI fencing last in UAE conditions?

The zinc coating protects the steel from rust. Service life depends on the coating mass, the environment (coastal sites are more demanding) and maintenance. Heavier galvanizing or a PVC coat over the galvanized wire extends it further. OGB does not quote a fixed lifespan because it depends on the site.

What height of chain-link fence do I need?

Boundary fencing is commonly 1.8 m to 2.4 m, while security perimeters often use 2.4 m to 3.0 m with a barbed-wire extension. Playgrounds and sports pitches use 1.2 m to 3.0 m. OGB confirms available heights per enquiry.

What wire gauge should I choose for chain-link?

2.0 to 2.5 mm suits homes and gardens, 3.0 to 3.5 mm suits commercial and industrial boundaries, and 4.0 mm and above is used on high security sites. Smaller mesh (25 – 40 mm) is harder to climb and cut; 50 mm is the economical standard.

Galvanized or PVC-coated chain-link?

Plain galvanized is the lower-cost utility finish. PVC-coated chain-link puts a coloured plastic layer over galvanized wire, giving a cleaner look, a softer surface and extra corrosion protection. It is preferred around schools, sports grounds, villas and coastal sites.

How far apart are chain-link fence posts?

Intermediate posts are set at 2.5 m to 3.0 m centres, with heavier straining posts and struts at every end, corner and change of direction and at 60 m to 70 m intervals on straight runs.
