Product overview

Stainless Steel Pipes (ASTM A312): overview and uses

Stainless steel pipe is seamless or welded austenitic stainless pipe made to ASTM A312, sized by nominal pipe size (NPS) and "S" schedules to ASME B36.19M. Grades 304L and 316L are the most common.

Stainless pipe resists corrosion without any coating, so it is used for water and desalination lines, food and beverage plants, chemical process lines and building services. Wall thickness is set by the schedule: 10S is thin-walled, 40S is standard and 80S is heavy.

For UAE coastal and chloride-rich sites, grade 316L is preferred because its molybdenum content resists pitting from salt. 304L suits most indoor and fresh-water service.

Characteristics

Why Stainless Steel Pipes works in the UAE

Corrosion resistant

316L for coastal and chloride service, 304L for general use.

Standard sizes

NPS ½" to 24" in schedules 5S, 10S, 40S and 80S.

Seamless or welded

Both routes covered by ASTM A312.

Questions

Stainless Steel Pipes (ASTM A312): common questions

Should I use 304L or 316L in the UAE?

Use 316L near the sea, around pools, or anywhere with salt or chlorides, because it resists pitting much better. 304L is suitable for indoor and fresh-water service.

What do 10S, 40S and 80S mean?

They are stainless pipe schedules that set the wall thickness for each pipe size. 10S is thin, 40S is standard and 80S is heavy-wall. Below NPS 10, 40S has the same wall as Schedule 40.

What is the difference between pipe and tube?

Pipe is ordered by nominal size and schedule for carrying fluids. Tube is ordered by exact outside diameter and wall thickness and is used for structural, instrument or heat-exchanger work.
